New Pattern: The Boned Strapless Bustier

Sewing Pattern for a Long Wedding Dress with Boned Bustier and Train, Sizes 34 to 56, Customizable, Paper and PDF, by Atelier Charlotte Auzou

It is with great joy that I finally present to you the pattern I have been working on over the past few months: the Boned Bustier, a fully customizable top pattern.

Since 2019, with my line of customizable patterns, I have strived to inspire and share the joy of sewing exceptional pieces, particularly wedding dresses. The bustier is one of these timeless pieces in the world of weddings: elegant, structured, versatile… and more modern than ever.

I have had this project in mind for a long time. I was simply waiting for the right moment to fully dedicate myself to it and offer you a pattern rich in techniques, details, and tips to help you master the art of the bustier. In the fall, I finally followed my intuition: I moved this project to the top of my list… and I went for it!

For this pattern, I set several objectives for myself:

  • Offer a design suitable for all busts, from smaller (like mine) to larger, consistent with what I already provide with my customizable patterns.
  • Create a bustier that is comfortable to wear and stays in place without needing constant adjustment. A model that adapts naturally to the body’s movements throughout the day, without extreme tightening or endless back lacing.
  • Provide genuine technical know-how, with flawless finishes, while maintaining accessibility so that everyone can enjoy sewing, regardless of skill level.

Keeping all of this in mind, I designed this new pattern, which I am proud to present today.

Optimal Support

Invisible from the outside, this pattern includes many technical details to maximize support: six boning channels, an elastic support belt at the waist, a non-slip elastic along the neckline, and removable straps for comfort during energetic dancing.

The Perfect Fit for Everyone

Since the launch of my customizable patterns in 2019, I have promised to offer all sizes in small bust and large bust versions so that every woman can easily find the size that flatters her figure. This new pattern is no exception.

Because this model requires precise fitting, I have included two specific tutorials in the booklet to adapt the pattern for very small busts (the adjustment I made for myself for the examples below) as well as very large busts.

As always, the patterns come in three heights: petite, standard, and tall.

A Wide Range of Fabric Options

Unfortunately, I cannot provide an exhaustive list of suitable fabrics for this pattern: the possibilities are endless, and that is the beauty of sewing — you can create completely different pieces simply by changing the fabric.

For the main fabric, keep in mind a few essential criteria: it should be woven fabric, not knit, and not stretchy — so avoid compositions containing elastane.

The pattern accommodates light, medium, or heavy fabrics. For light fabrics, it is recommended to fully interface the main fabric on the wrong side. For heavier fabrics, take care to limit bulk for comfort and a clean finish.

In this pattern, the main fabric is just one part of the materials list. Several technical fabrics and specific notions are required. I have also written a dedicated article detailing all my recommendations.

100% Customizable

A short dress, a long straight dress, a majestic dress with a train, a jumpsuit or shorts… with the customization concept, the possibilities are endless. This bustier pattern is compatible with all customizable bottom patterns, allowing you to create exactly the piece you dream of. It is not compatible with sleeve patterns.

Unleash your creativity and design your next project with the customization tool!

Comprehensive Guidance

The provided PDF booklet is, as always, very detailed and illustrated with step-by-step photos. It is full of tips and tricks to guide you confidently through your project, stress-free and with ease.

This pattern is available exclusively on my shop in PDF format (€6) and Paper + PDF (€9.9). It is a customizable pattern, meaning it cannot be sewn on its own. It must be combined with a bottom pattern selected from the shop.

If you are not yet familiar with the customization concept, I invite you to learn more here.

My Customized Creations

To showcase this new pattern, I sewed three personalized creations, each in a different style, to help you envision your next handmade piece.

The Wedding Dress

It was obvious to create a wedding dress — I designed this pattern with future brides in mind. However, I wanted this dress to be different from those in the "My Wedding Dress" ebook, which were made with soft, flowing fabrics and lace.

I fell in love with this brocade fabric generously offered by Stragier, a Belgian company known for exceptional fabrics and wedding expertise. It is medium weight, structured yet fluid, with large raised flowers giving it a unique, majestic character. I am in love with this material and hope you will be too!

The skirt of this dress uses the Pleated Skirt pattern in the flat pleats version. This pattern was previously only available in short and midi lengths, but I fully updated it to offer five lengths, including one with a small train, chosen for this creation.

This update is available to anyone who purchased the pattern. You can download it directly from your customer account.

The Little Black Dress

An evening or ceremony dress can also be created from the bustier pattern. Imagine the version you would like to wear for a special occasion.

For this creation, I again chose the pleated skirt, this time in box pleats and midi length. It’s fascinating that with the same two customizable patterns (Boned Bustier and Pleated Skirt), I was able to sew both this black dress and the wedding dress — two completely different pieces. This is exactly what I love about sewing!

For the fabric, I chose a black scuba crepe from Rascol. Usually, I order fabrics online and they match my vision well. This time, however, I did not pay attention that it was a knit fabric, therefore stretchy, which goes against my earlier recommendations.

In the end, it works fairly well… but I would only recommend this fabric for expert sewers.

The Liberty Print Dress

Who remembers the bustier Liberty dresses from Sessùn or The Kooples (as found in Grazia archives)? These dresses were everywhere in the 2010s, and I never got one… they simply didn’t suit my shape. Fifteen years later, I finally have my Liberty bustier dress!

Short Bustier Dress in Liberty Fabric Ciara, Customizable, Sizes 34 to 56, PDF or Paper

The fabric is Liberty Ciara cotton batiste, purchased from Mondial Tissus. For the bottom, I used the Tulip Wrap Skirt pattern and added removable straps with snap buttons, as explained in the pattern’s step-by-step instructions.
